Background Information

The Sami people are the least numerous native peoples with 70,000 people living in Sampi. The Sami people originated as hunters and gatherers of reindeer. The tradition trades of the group include reindeer herding, meat production, arts and handicrafts.
Some Sami handicrafts include drums of Noadi. The drums were musical instruments as well as the artists interpretation of the worlds of men and gods.

Also the kolt is the traditional garment of the Sami people. It is very functional and warm for their climate as well as being a very bright and colorful example of their art. In the Sami people high school in the town of Jokkmokk, Sami students take a class that teaches them their people traditional craft forms to keep their traditions and culture alive.

The Sami people modernized in 1993 when their own Parliament. The Sami Parliament are a publicly elected body and state authority but have no political representation in the in Sweden's Parliament.
