The traditional view of women over shows that they have been oppressed and did not have much power, but the Saami women are a little different. They, like other traditional gender roles, bring up the children and teach them the culture of the Saami people, but they are the vital component of helping their family and community to survive by making clothes. Some people thought that since the women had to take care of the family over the winder, the women had more power, but a Saami Author says that this is no longer the case after Christianity entered their culture because the religion "teaches that women should be men's servants. This indigenous group recently started to develop gender issues. The feminist movement did not begin until the 1970s and this movement along with the introduction of Christianity caused women to obtain a more modern type of gender role. Now the women have no need to make clothes because they can be bought. The modern Sami women cooks, sometimes makes clothes, threads, and cures the meat.
